Phillip Seymour Hoffman is being rumored to play the Penguin in Christopher Nolan’s sequel to Batman Begins.
Now, Hoffman is a great actor, evidenced by his work in Punch Drunk Love as well as Happiness and, though I have yet to see it, everyone is blowing their load over his performance in Capote. On this basis, I think he’d be an excellent choice for the role, this news doesn’t concern me.
What does concern me is the fact that Christopher Nolan is jumping into characters from the Batman comic that have already been portrayed on film. There is no doubt in my mind that his work far exceeds any previous attempts at Batman, but as soon as you bring in characters like the Joker and the Penguin, you allow audiences to immediately compare and contrast the look, direction, and performances of previous filmmakers. I’m not saying they can’t handle it, I’m just saying their opening the door to trouble, trouble that was avoided in Batman Begins by utilizing characters not before used by previous directors.
