New Blog of Interest: The Life of Riley

I find myself still struggling with where this blog is going and what it’s purpose is for myself and the world around me, and what I keep coming back to is connection. Social Media, as buzzword-y as it may be, has connected the world more than anyone truly understands. Beyond the bloggers trying to make a buck and the bloggers that have tied blogging to their careers, it is the bloggers who blog as part of an inter-connected lifestyle that I find most fascinating.

This is why I find blogs like The Life of Riley to be so important:

Good Morning everyone. My name is Olive Riley. I live in Australia near Sydney. I was born in Broken Hill on Oct. 20th 1899.Broken Hill is a mining town, far away in the centre of Australia. My Friend, Mike, has arranged this blog for me. He is doing the typing and I am telling the stories. He thinks it’s a good idea to tell what’s going on. He already made a film about me a few years back and people liked that, so they might like this blog too, he says. We’ll see.

The preceding video from Michael Wesch was an excellent depiction of the interconnected nature of the new web and The Life of Riley is a working example of how this can be beneficial beyond simply a source of information or data. Beyond the productivity tips, programming solutions, marketing ideas, and self-help guides, we can learn from one another as people — through mistakes, experience, and old-fashioned storytelling.
