YouTube to make it’s TV debut

So, Apple announced that it will soon stream YouTube via Apple TV to televisions everywhere, or at least to TV’s whose owners have bitten the bullet and picked up the little gray box.

Obvious hurdles stand in the way of mass usage, primarily the lack of Apple TV’s in households, but this certainly opens the door the door for a more accurate view of YouTube’s true validity. For the last year critics and analysts alike have placed the flash video site on a pedestal as a shining example of the future of entertainment. So, the moment where YouTube crosses the line from a novelty video site to a bona fide entertainment source has almost definitively arrived. For many critics, this is a step closer to validity but appealing to mass audiences in a medium that is unfamiliar may present new obstacles.

To speculate for just a moment…

In the case of struggling acceptance, a combination of YouTube’s on-demand video platform and Current.tv’s established but lackluster television presence could provide an interesting balance. With Current’s growing expertise in the medium and the hype, energy, and personality YouTube would bring could create a combined momentum that could reach an audience beyond Apple TV early-adapters.

Regardless of strategy, it would be exciting to see television returned to the spirit of the early 1980’s when MTV revolutionized the industry, which has since become bland and formulaic. A truly interactive experience that carried the ability to excite viewers would not only pep up studio execs, but could reinvigorate consumers as well.
